Atualmente, 41% dizem que recebem a maioria de suas notícias a partir da internet. A televisão continua a ser a mais ampla fonte utilizada para as notícias nacionais e internacionais – 66% dos americanos dizem que é sua principal fonte de notícias.
A pesquisa nacional realizada pela Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, realizada entre 01-05 dezembro de 2010 com 1500 adultos via telefones celulares e fixos considera que mais pessoas continuam a citar a internet do que os jornais como sua principal fonte de notícias, refletindo tanto o crescimento da internet quanto o declínio gradual no jornal
leitura (de 34% em 2007 para 31% agora). A proporção citando o rádio como principal fonte de nacionais e notícias internacionais manteve-se relativamente estável nos últimos anos, com 16% dizendo ser esta a sua principal fonte.
Uma análise de como as diferentes gerações estão buscando as notícias sugere que estas tendências são susceptíveis de continuar. Em 2010, pela primeira vez, a internet superou a televisão como principal fonte de notícias para as pessoas com menos de 30 anos. Desde 2007, o percentual de 18 a 29 anos de idade citando a internet como principal fonte quase dobrou, de
34% para 65%. Durante este período, o número de jovens citando a televisão como fonte principal de novidades caiu de 68% para 52%. Entre 30 a 49 anos, a internet está quase empatada com a televisão : atualmente, 48% dizem que a internet é a sua principal fonte – até 16 pontos a menos em 2007 – e 63% citam a televisão.
